Mike Lee Holiday Basketball Bash

posted Dec 9, 2015, 8:06 AM by mjozokos@sau61.org
Sponsored each year by the Farmington Tiger Booster Club, this year's tournament is the 37th annual boys and the 35th anniversary girls!
The Tournament began with a boys division 37 years ago and added a girls division 2 years later.  The tournament has hosted teams from all over the state of NH and Maine.  For the first 30 years, the tournament was called the Farmington Christmas Tournament, however, upon the retirement of long-time principal and coach Mike Lee in 2009, the Booster Club changed the name to the Mike Lee Holiday Basketball Bash!  Coach Lee is on hand each year to present trophies to the champions and all-tourney selections.

The tournament not only guarantees 3 games per team providing healthy competition during students' holiday break, but it also promotes positive sportsmanship and has other exciting elements as well.  In addition to 1st and 2nd place team awards, a team sportsmanship award and individual sportsmanship award is presented to each division.  In 2008, the individual sportsmanship award was named after the passing of long-time fan and Farmington Sports Hall of Famer, Betty Vachon, to the "Betty Vachon Sportsmanship Award."  Each year, her husband, Bill, proudly presents the award in her memory. A 3 point competition is held each year and awards issued to the top shooter in each division.  In addition, an all-tournament team is selected by the coaches each year as well.

This year, the tournament hosts 17 teams and is the largest holiday tournament in the state of NH.  It is also one of the top 3 longest running tournaments along with the Queens City in Manchester and the Lakes Region in Gilford. This year, opening night (12/26) will also be "Hall of Fame Night" where any member of the Farmington Sports Hall of Fame gets free admission and is acknowledged in a brief ceremony at 7:45PM.  With plenty of home cooking offered at the concession stand, music playing, and competitive play, the 2015 tournament is bound to be very special.  The tournament runs Dec. 26th-Dec. 30th.  Make it a part of your holiday tradition!  We hope to see you there!
